My first attempt at lithophae printing its an old pic of my mum with my new born daughter so its very old so not the best quality pic,
although it has come out quiter well, below is a link to a free site to create your stl files from images

Ha!  I was looking at a sample the other day and thinking I should try it, it's the sort of Arty thing my daughter would like.

Might try my youngest grandson in "Sebastian the Crab" stage costume, in red translucent.

Cura seems to make a really good job it is recommened to print vertical they say it looses quality if flat, they aslo recommend 0.1 layer height and 100% infill or infill off if your walls would make it solid,

heres a Pic of the settings I use when you load a pic into cura

you can alter the width to what ever you want and cura scales it to suit if you do alter either of the dimensions the other will change to suit to auto keep the aspect ration  ~~

try semi transparent ABS/PLA, you can make them one layer thick but retain image quality.

with the ABS you can light vape treat them and the thin parts become almost entirely see through which makes the image effect even more striking. ~~

printed upright like youve been doing with the thickness of the thinnest parts being 1.5mm in width max, essentially it makes it thin enough that the slicer wont add infill (like it was set in "vase" mode) which makes the thinnest parts almost entirely see-through and in the case of the ABS post print vaped the thin parts do become entirely see-through.

it makes the actual lithophane image clear even in lower light levels.

Helps if you want to make them into a framed wall mounted room feature but dont wanna risk putting a chunky bulb behind or LEDs that can get hot too without heat sinks (you can use lower voltage LEDs that dont suffer excessive heat).

The ones ive printed are 3 to 4mm thich with the thinest / base set to 0.8 so no infill the slicer is also set to 100% infill to fill the thicker bits,
Ive done another and old wedding pic the older pics dont work out as nice as newer sharper pics but still not to bad  ~~

EDIT:  OK, so WHY on earth is the default setting under image "negative" ffs..........................  :banghead: :banghead:

Well, after a less than perfect start, when the extruder had managed to hide some black to come out part way through the white print (GRRR, and I "flushed" it three times, too), its working quite well.
