If your new or experienced. The number one tool you need for bed levelling is a set of feeler gauge's.

I've been getting great prints with my Anet A8 but was never 100% happy with the bed levelling when printing out calibration prints and normal prints. For the last 3 days I've been using the paper method and eyeballing, it's been driving me nuts with not getting all four corners equal distance from the nozzle.

Last night stopped off at the local Halfords (Hellfraughts) £3.99 lighter, wielding my feelers and 20 minutes to level the bed and Z-Offset I have a perfectly aligned up nozzle and bed. Calibration 20x20 cube and single wall all perfect.

Printing a set of Xbox One holders now at 0.1 layer height and looking smooth!

If you want precision down to 1/10 millimetre then there is a Tool I designed for Prusa's but for some oddball reason I forgot to add it to thingiverse

just added it to thingverse now if you ever have need, you can pick the guages up for 3-4 squid and their surprisingly accurate.

I just let the nozzle crash into the print bed in several locations and job done  ::)

Tyre tread adapter is a excellent idea! Looks like a modded calliper, same one I have. But I'm really happy with the way I have it now with the feeler gauges, I just hope it's repeatable. This is definitely on the buy list though.

Smashing the nozzle into the bed. Yep done that to level it. Didn't fill me with much confidence and I knew the prints could be better. However nozzle touching the heated bed and adjusting the z-stop does work and did get me to do a few prints. We all have our ways and processes. If it works, it works!

The paper method fails in my mind due to the paper being soft. Once you have used it a few times it gets flattened. So first two points will be ok then the last two get worse and worse unless you change the paper.

I can see paper levelling being my rage trigger point everytime I see it recommended!

Well it works for me and very accurately but thats only because its a Duet 3d Smart Effector and has a strain detector on it,

Heres a little video of it running the bed compensation mesh routine it tap dances it way all around the bed  ~~

Repeatability of that probe is in the order of 0.005mm as well

Doug

Edit for typo is repeatability they are actually repeatable to better than 7 microns and more typically 3 this has been established by using Russ Gries's scripts to measure this.
